Thursday evening

i can't remember how i actually know of this place.. most likely through the internet... but what makes me want to go to try it out is the fact that it serves ayam buah keluak ...its a perankan dish which can be found in most nonya restaurants, definitely though, not in a cafe, together with steaks and fish and chips.

plus the location was near ... woot!

pity though... was too full so i didn't try it... but muahahaha... i will be back... right??

ayam buah keluak

it is actually chicken cooked in a sweet, soury, tangy kind of broth, a little bit like the assam fish that you eat in claypots... but in here it is cooked together with this pungent smelling nut called buah keluak which i love and my dad hates.. hahaha.. i guess its a taste either you love it or hate it... something like blue cheese (bleah) ...

i am darn proud to say my mum cooks it better.. the nut, is cracked open and its contents are dug out and mashed with chicken and mushroom and then stuffed back.. i have seen my granny at work with this... not difficult but can be quite tedious as she has to go through each nut checking if it is spoilt... i smelt the bad ones before (so that i will know mah... if i need to prepare it next time and since all of them are so pungent how would one know which is alright and which ones are lethal)

and they are real nasty when bad.. like at second look after you smell, the nut emits a skull sign kind of nasty...not that i want to boast but ours are better... hahaha...theirs are mashed up too fine which i thought was a waste... my granny does it so that you can feel the texture in your mouth so that the taste lasts longer.. nice! it is even nicer if you mix it with white rice... its like the taste is rounder and spreads over the plain rice.. dribble a little bit of the broth over the mixture and i can finish my meal before i know it..

here... the broth is nice and the chicken was tender! almost similar to what my mum makes.. but they only gave one small nut... i need at least two big ones to mix with the rice .. yeah welll...

hmmm.. seems like i always get very carried away when i talk about food that i like .. muahahaha

Fish and Chips

i like the fries.. hahaha.. its my kind of fries... crispy on the outside but yet when you bite it, there is still suffcient "mashy" potato on the inside to make your insides warm... hahaha...

the fish wasn't really fresh though and it reminded me of the grilled fish i ate in school actually... hahaha...the grilled fish which i told rena "taste like it couldn't make up its mind to be a grilled fish or a fried fish"... the salad though generous was a tad pepperish ... but that might not be a bad point cos it proves that its homemade.

the ambience was really nice... small yet cosy... food was not perfect yet satisfying and i will really want to go back... just for the belgian waffles and pancakes i saw on the menu.. hahaha and maybe for the fries too..

service was good.. the staff actually entertained a young boy, going through with him the contents of the menu, trying to find a dish to fit his budget even though they know that he will not get anything in the end. thumbs up! was impressed.. =)

a good end to a long day... k la.. company is good too la.. hhahaha

then on the way back... hahahaha. i met Rena!

hahahaha.. in the most tai-ko kind of way... she was stopping due to a red light and i was walking on the sheltered walkway beside the road.. hahahaha.. what a coincidence.. when normally.. i won't even look at the traffic

actually i spotted janice first and was thinking "hey this girl look familiar" and when she started smiling and then rena's face appeared with that super excited look of hers ... hahaha... totally awesome is the only phrase i could think of... sorry la... i am bimbo that way...

do you know... the only reason we was walking there was because we had some time to kill so we decided to walk further down to another bus stop to take 198 when there was another bus stop which was much closer.. so i guess some times you are at a place at a certain time for a reason..

and apparently ulu pandan has upgraded itself and now it is not as "ulu" as i thought... so now cannot use that to laugh at people anymore..

sigh and before i know it ... its 1 a.m and time to sleep..
